Choosing the paper to use for your specific job is a personal matter but a few considerations when taken into account will ensure you are happy with the finished product.

When making paper a dilute suspension of wood pulp fibres in water is drained through a screen, so that a mat of randomly interwoven fibres is laid down. Water is then removed from this mat of fibres by pressing and drying to make paper. During this process papers can be made with different surfaces and colours depending on their intended purpose.

For printing colour Brochures and Leaflets for marketing and sales etc the paper used frequently has a gloss or matt coating on both sides and is typically made in shades of white.

For printing Letterheads, Business Cards, Folders, Leaflets, Posters, Forms etc an un-coated paper which is produced in a large variety of colours and thicknesses is usually used.

For printing multi part Invoices, Delivery Notes, Statements, Business Forms etc a specially coated paper is used allowing for a copy to be made without the use of carbon paper typically called NCR (No Carbon Required).

If the printer you are currently using cannot explain to you the different qualities and benefits of the huge range of papers that is available your printing will cost you more. Spot Colour, Special Colour, Specials, Pantone’s are all terms used by printers.
 
When you hear any of these terms it simply means that the colour you have chosen is produced using the Pantone colour system not the CMYK system as per my previous article. The pantone colour scheme uses a range of pre-prepared colour ‘recipes’ which they call shades.
 
By mixing a combination of the basic colours, over 1,300 shades can be achieved, but these shades do not include metallic, fluorescents, or pastel finishes. The Pantone system offers a suitable colour for every printing situation, however, to maintain the true shade they need to be printed as an individual colour. The CMYK printing process can achieve a representation of your chosen colour, you will need to decide if it is close enough. It’s a little like looking at a paint colour card you might use when comparing paint in a diy store.
 
Pantone colours are perfect for single and multi-colour printing and can be used to create that perfect company image or simply improve the appeal and effectiveness of single colour printed forms.
 
If the printer you are currently using does not have their own design team, and many do not, your printing will cost you more. Full Colour Printing, CMYK, Four Colour Printing, Process Colours, are all terms used by printers.

When you hear any of these terms it simply means that all the colours you see on your printed copy is produced using the CMYK color model.

CMYK simply refers to the four inks used in the printing process in varying densities of screen to achieve all the colours you see.

C is cyan (a blue-green colour), M is magenta (a reddish pink colour), Y is yellow, and K is black, (called K because it is the key plate).

At Palm Print & Design we have a four colour printing machine which prints each colour cyan, magenta, yellow and black on each sheet of material as it passes through the machine at the same time.

The picture above of Sunny, Ben’s one year old Rottweiler, he also has a Cocker Spaniel called Meg and a Cat called Ted, shows the CMYK breakdown of colours which, when printed on the same sheet overlay to produce the full colour picture.

If the printer you currently buy from does not have a four colour printing machine your printing will cost you more. Why, because they will need to put the same sheet of material through their machine more than once and you will be charged for the extra time this takes or they will be paying a trade printer to produce your printing and adding their charge on before they pass you the invoice. At Palm Group we believe local businesses should support local charities and activities, one of the many we currently support is the Minsters’ Rail Campaign. The Minsters’ Rail Campaign promotes the re-opening of the train line from Hull to York via Beverley and we have supported the campaign by printing leaflets, newsletters, letterheads, campaign posters and also the photography of events to be used in the local papers and publicity material free of charge for the last 10 years.  

The enthusiastic and creative chairman of the campaign is George McManus, a long time friend of ours who recently arranged for the display, over the Christmas period at Beverley Minster, of a 4mm scale model reproduction of Market Weighton Station in the mid 1930s. On Thursday 15th at the opening ceremony we went along as usual to deliver the free leaflets and take the photographs to promote this exhibition.

Think about these simple questions and make your leaflets work harder for you:

• What are you selling
• Who are you selling it too
• Why should they buy it from you

 Think about what makes you different or special.

• What problem can you solve
• What need can you satisfy
• Why should they buy from you

 We’ve seen leaflets which are no more than business cards a name, a number and maybe a list of stuff they do.

 Think about when you get a leaflet like that, what do you do with it

 The most effective leaflets use time-bound offers.

•  Maybe “half price this month”,
•  “free teddy with every quote” or
•  “free consultation during November.”

 Think really hard about offering an incentive — and the level of it.

• “5% off” may be enough to get some interest…
• but what would “25% off” do to the response?

 There are many ways to get your message out. We’d recommend that you spend at least 30% of your budget on design. Design can mean the difference between success and failure.

 A badly designed leaflet may do more damage than you think. There’s no such thing as a second impression, so get it right first time. We can help. Design is our business, after all. Talk to us.
